Will Callaghan knew the time had come to act. The first week after REI listed on the stock exchange it had quadrupled in value. The financial markets had learned that interests associated with the company had secured a short term controlling position, a corner, in the cobalt metal market. The cobalt metal price soared and REI shares peaked at ten times the issue price. The number of shares traded over two weeks exceeded by several times the total number issued. Even the press became caught up in the euphoria. It extolled the benefits of the new technology for the environment and the emergence of “A new paradigm”. One journalist headed his article SANTA’S BIGGEST PRESENT. The market had never seen a Christmas like it.

When Callaghan read these stories he acted swiftly. He sold all his REI shares. The profit enabled him to recoup his entire investment in Nestor, Nankervis & Co. plus a tidy margin. The shares continued to rise on huge turnover. Callaghan watched bemused, content with the profit he had realised. In addition, the value of Nestor’s firm, now controlled by Callaghan’s group, had trebled.

He figured it could take several years of hard work to translate the technology into a commercial product. He would monitor progress over that time. The market would lose interest as the development work progressed, always chasing quick results. Once REI was ready to go to production they would need more money. That is when Callaghan would be pleased to oblige, at a far more realistic price than current levels.

John Martin had decided to take up Callaghan’s suggestion and go to Prague, where a lawyer had been briefed to assist the eighteen year-old in the search for his identity. They had both agreed there would be no advantage to leave before Christmas. John decided to spend the festive season with friends, including regular visits to Callaghan. With the public holidays now over and the new year well under way, it was time for Prague.

The flight left early so Callaghan drove John Martin to Sydney International Airport himself rather than rely on a cab. He made sure they had more than adequate time and took him to the business class lounge for a bon voyage glass of champagne. Callaghan could feel the young lad’s excitement.

“To a new year, new discoveries and the trip of a lifetime,” said Callaghan, raising his glass. John returned the gesture. “Someone from the law firm in Prague will meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel. The next day they’ll take you to their offices and help in the search for your biological parents. There is a real possibility the records lead nowhere. The names on the birth certificate may not be traceable, so keep your expectations low. It may even be difficult to track information on Alice Braun, assuming that is her real name. Finding her also may not lead anywhere,” said Callaghan. “But most importantly, enjoy yourself.”

They shook hands. Callaghan smiled, turned and left the lounge.
